The Department of History at the University of North Carolina was established in 1891, though courses in history had been taught by various members of the faculty prior to that time. It was known as the Department of History until 1920, when its name was changed to Department of History and Government to reflect the incorporation of political science courses into the curriculum. Exploring the History and Legacy of Slavery at the Feb 27, 2018 · In 2005, the University Archives put on an exhibit on the history of slavery at UNC.The exhibit materials provided evidence of the use of enslaved laborers in the construction of early campus buildings and as servants for students and faculty, and showed how proceeds from the sale of slaves were used to finance the University.
First Black Undergraduate Students. In 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court reversed itself and outlawed all forms of segregation in the public schools. The following year, the federal courts ordered the admission of black undergraduates to the university. The first three were from Hillside High School in Durham, North Carolina. Black enrollment remained low for many years. THE BEGINNING OF NROTC AT UNC CHAPEL HILL. The Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) program was established in 1926 to offer the opportunity for young men to qualify for commissions in the United States Naval Reserve while attending college. Later the NROTC was revised to offer students the opportunity to graduate with a bachelors degree and a commission as either a History of UNCG:Inside UNCGR.S. Pullen and R.T. Gray gave the original 10-acre site. The institution opened on October 5, 1892, with a student body of 198 and a faculty of 15 and the final enrollment reached 223 at the end of the first year. Classes were organized in three departments:commercial, domestic science, and pedagogy.
